I am experiencing pain in the stump and find walking very difficult. Any suggestions as to how to overcome phantom pain and rubbing and bleeding of the stump when wearing the artificial limb.

The first question that should be answered, is how long has it been since your amputation. Usually the muscles remaining in the calf area atrophy (shrink) drastically. This changes the shape of your leg drastically within the first year to year and a half. The answer may be as simple as just adding more socks to accommodate volume change. If the amputation has been within a year, a prosthetist should be actively scheduling appointments to add pads or make modifications. If there is bleeding at the end of the stump, you should stop wearing it immediately because infection could result in further problems such as more amputation. I cannot stress the importance of seeing a prosthetist to figure the cause of such a problem. As for the phantom pain, there are multiple techniques however all of the have yet to be proven. My belief is that certain techniques work for certain people. Try out as many as you can, however your first priority is to address your skin issues.
