OPP T-Hook (Compare to historical Trautman Hook)

Invented by J.H. Kosek and Raymond B. Trautman in 1925, the Trautman was popular mainly in the agricultural communities of the Midwest US up to and following the end of its production roughly 20 years ago. We'd like to help bring it back.

"Thanks for sharing! One section of this paper that impacted me was the feedback from users that tried the different prototypes. I felt like I got some sense of the huge learning investment it takes for amputees to become adept at using a new device.…"

"As far as I know their is no electronic copy. I borrowed it from Harold Sears himself and I already gave it back. Also the copy I got was missing pages. When I get home I will try to find an image of his design."

"I wear some silicon tube over the hook claws; the hook is designed to be used without them as well though. Also where could I get a copy of the Sears thesis? Did someone scan it, are the 138 pages electronically available? Thank you very much in…"

"I agree that rubber inserts would be essential this design. I always meant to have them, only I didn't have time to model them. You have a very good eye for hook designs. In fact my hook shape was heavily influenced by the Harold Sears Hook,…"

"Daniel - That looks like great work. I have a couple of comments, and a question. I'd very much like to see some rubber inserts on the outsides of the hook, in order to allow stabilization of credit card receipts, etc. This is a constant…"

Phase 3: Design Phase

In phase 3 I modeled my ideas in SolidWorks analyzed my ideas in Microsoft Excel and then used my final model to make a rapid prototype. Here are the results of my many hours and late nights:

Here are some of the features my design includes:

1. Wide opening in between fingers for increased visibility.

2. Curved grasping… Continue

It appears that my blog has fallen quite behind. I have already graduated and got my masters degree, but here is a retrospective update on what happened.

Phase 2: Concept Development

In phase 2 I compiled the information I obtained in phase 1 and came up with goals to shoot for with my design. Here are the goals that I came up with in no particular order:

1. Firm grip

2. Narrow well-mating tip

3. Efficient linkage

4. Multiple… Continue

Phase 1: Idea Collection

Idea collection Phase is in full swing! Here are some of the hook ideas I have collected so far

1) Adjustable or Selectable Prehension. This is an old idea where the user can adjust the pinch force on a VC device. This would allow users to handle both heavy and delicate objects.

2) Detachable third finger. This would allow different modules to attach directly to the device such as a knife holder or different… Continue

A New Hook Design for the 21st Century: Introduction

Posted on February 18, 2008 at 8:00pm 0 Comments

The first post on blog entries is so awkward. Well, anyways, here is a little background about me: I am a Mechanical Engineering student at San Jose State who is working on my Masters Thesis project. When I was looking for a project I knew I wanted to work on a product that was challenging, and also helpful to people that are often overlooked. Then when I factored in my contacts at Hosmer Dorrance, it was a no-brainer to choose a prosthics project.

My main goals is to provide a… Continue

Hey Daniel, I'm always ready to chat about improvements to body powered systems. The design elements you mentioned all sound interesting, particularly the third finger/ attachment idea. Having a more modular device that could be quickly adapted to support tasks like holding a steak knife securely, riding a bicycle or motorcycle, or playing a guitar would be very helpful. As for aesthetics, I don't care what it looks like as long as its functional.
