I've attached the pdf with the assembly instructions from that page.

Unfortunately it just has pictures of the legos, no part numbers. Anybody familiar with legos that can help identify the parts? What's the best way to buy them -- individually or in some kind of general purpose kit?

Anybody know how to contact John Bergmann?

I've added a page under the Files tab to hold files related to the hand project.

LEGO Hand Files

I've started trying to identify the part names and numbers, and have good guesses for almost half -- see LEGO Hand parts list on the files page. I posted a labelled picture on the files page -- please PM me if you can figure out any of the remaining parts and I will update it.
