AK Amputee To Get 'Bionic' Leg in Australia: Osseointegration

via Nelson Mail: New Zealand

A Nelson man is heading to Sydney for a cutting-edge operation which
will see him with the first "bionic leg" in New Zealand.

Phil Coulson flies to Sydney on Tuesday for the first of two
operations which will see a metal stem implanted directly into the
femur of his amputated leg.

"It's still fairly early days as far as the technology goes, it's
only available that I know of in Sydney and Germany."

A second operation, six weeks later, will see his leg re-opened and
another part, called an adapter, connected to the metal stem in the
femur. The adapter leads out of the stump and the knee and leg
components of the artificial leg fit directly to it.

Mr Coulson's right leg was amputated above the knee after a
motorcycle accident near Dovedale in October 2010.

The health professional and father of three said he discovered the
cutting-edge leg on the internet, while looking for a "better way of
doing things".
