Sharing stories and ideas

Unlike many members of this group, I have four intact limbs, and all my digits. I consider myself fortunate in that regard.

That said, I realize that many in this community who have lost limbs or use thereof, have the opportunity to explore new ways of living. I admire and respect your courage and imagination.

I have some knowledge and experience of how to present a worthy cause. In that spirit, I would like to offer whatever expertise, ideas, and thoughts I may have as one of the fully-limbed… Continue

Carnes arm - history and intricate mechanism revealed

As Jon suggested there should be an overview of work done. A step completed, so here we go.

Mark Lesek from Tasmania is underway to dismantle and rebuild a mechanical hand / arm with modern technology.

As he bought a Carnes arm that contained what was once considered absolutely marvellous and unprecedented technology and after I came across old German legacy material, I decided to sit down and write it up for the English speakers here.

The current journey starts here just about two years ago,… Continue

What brings me here

My name is Philip Sanford. I am a 35 year old male from Hillsboro,Tx. I am a member of the Amputee Coalition Of America. (ACA) On August 23,2008 my then pregnant wife and I were involved in a motor vehicle accident. I was trapped in the vehicle which was engulfed in flames. I suffered 4th degree burns to my limbs, resulting in the amputation of both my legs above the knee. 6 weeks later I was released from Parkland Hospital i… Continue

SOURCES OF INFORMATION

Open Prosthetics is our informational site and has links to accept donations. We maintain an Instructables Group, on which completed designs can be posted, and other collaboration can happen. We also have a a Google Group.

We're working on a wiki, where we will post information on prosthetics in general, to include information on the history of prosthetics, and a users guide to what is available.

Too many ways to find out about stuff? Maybe, but use whatever you're comfortable with, and we're sure the good ideas will get noticed.

Pimp My Arm

The place at OPP where users can talk about their needs and desires for prosthetic development, and volunteers can discuss solutions. This is the "blue sky," "no idea too crazy," Halfbakery section of the project. A more detailed explanation is here.

Pimp my arm has sections for arms, legs, and everything else.

More About the Wiki

A wiki is a user-editable webpage. Ours has sections on the various projects we're hoping to get users and volunteers working on.

We'd like to figure out what people need in a toolkit to maintain their prostheses as needed.

We're looking for help designing a survey to figure out what amputees like and don't like about their prostheses (if they wear them at all). Here's your chance to tell everyone what they should have asked you.
